## Leveraging Blockchain and Smart Contracts to Revolutionise the Renewable Energy Exchange: The Fuel Switch Approach

As the global energy landscape shifts towards sustainability, the need for transparent, efficient, and reliable systems to manage Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) has become paramount. Fuel Switch, a pioneering Renewable Energy Exchange platform, is at the forefront of this transformation, utilizing cutting-edge blockchain technology and smart contracts to streamline the trading and management of RECs. Built on a carbon-neutral blockchain network, Fuel Switch offers a solution that ensures transparency, speed, and the highest level of security.

&#x20;

### The Role of Blockchain in Fuel Switch

Blockchain technology lies at the heart of Fuel Switch, providing a robust and reliable foundation for all platform operations. By leveraging Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), Fuel Switch ensures that all transactions are transparent, traceable, and immutable. This guarantees that every REC transaction, from issuance to redemption, is securely recorded and easily auditable.

One of the key advantages of the blockchain network used by Fuel Switch is its rapid transaction speed. Capable of processing over 10,000 transactions per second, the platform can handle high volumes of trades without compromising on performance. This speed is crucial in a market where timely transactions can significantly impact market dynamics and the value of RECs.

Furthermore, Fuel Switch utilizes the most advanced smart contract network available. Smart contracts automate and enforce the terms of REC transactions, eliminating the need for intermediaries and reducing the risk of human error. This automation ensures that all parties involved in a transaction adhere to the agreed-upon terms, providing a level of security and efficiency unmatched by traditional systems.

&#x20;

### Fuel Switch Platform Features

The Fuel Switch platform is designed to cater to all participants in the renewable energy market, from Renewable Energy Device (RED) owners to Off-Takers and third-party registries. The following features highlight how Fuel Switch is transforming the way RECs are managed and traded:

#### 1. Smart Contracts

Smart contracts on the Fuel Switch platform automate a wide range of processes, including the issuance, trading, and redemption of RECs. These contracts are self-executing and enforce the terms of agreements without the need for intermediaries. This reduces transaction costs and increases the overall efficiency of the platform.

#### 2. REC Issuer and Database

Fuel Switch serves as both a REC issuer and a comprehensive database, storing all relevant information related to RECs. This includes data on renewable energy generation, project registration, and REC ownership. By maintaining a centralized and immutable record, Fuel Switch ensures that all information is accurate, up-to-date, and easily accessible to authorized parties.

#### 3. Registry Integration

Fuel Switch seamlessly integrates with global REC standards, including the International REC (I-REC) Standard, as well as the zaRECs registry, with the capability to integrate into more. This integration allows Fuel Switch to align with the requirements of these standards, ensuring that all RECs traded on the platform meet the highest levels of credibility and compliance.

In South Africa, for example, the Fuel Switch platform works closely with zaRECs, one of the local South African registries.

#### 4. Marketplace

The Fuel Switch marketplace allows users to buy and sell RECs in a transparent and efficient manner. Whether participants are looking to trade RECs for speculative purposes or to offset their carbon footprint, the marketplace provides a secure environment for transactions. The platform's advanced matching engine ensures that buyers and sellers are paired quickly and efficiently.

#### 5. REC Redemption Portal

Fuel Switch offers a dedicated portal for the redemption of RECs. This feature allows entities to voluntarily offset their carbon emissions by retiring RECs, ensuring that their environmental impact is accurately accounted for. The redemption process is automated through smart contracts, ensuring that RECs are retired immediately upon redemption.

### Conclusion

Fuel Switch is redefining the way Renewable Energy Certificates are managed and traded, offering a platform that combines the power of blockchain technology, smart contracts, and global standards. By providing a transparent, efficient, and secure environment for REC transactions, Fuel Switch is playing a crucial role in advancing the global transition to renewable energy. As the platform continues to evolve, it is poised to become a cornerstone of the green economy, empowering businesses and individuals to contribute to a more sustainable future.

# What is a Broker?

Source: [theforage.com](https://www.theforage.com/blog/careers/what-is-a-broker#:~:text=A%20broker%20is%20a%20person,estate%2C%20finance%2C%20and%20trade.) *(edited)*

A broker is a person who helps traders, sellers, or purchasers complete transactions. Consider a broker as a middleman who makes sure that everything goes smoothly and that everyone has the information they need. The Broker simply trades on your behalf.

### How do Brokers make money

Brokers can generate revenue in a number of ways. The most popular approaches are mark-up fees, commission fees, and advising fees (also called spreads). Within the context of Fuel Switch the Broker generates revenue through commission fees that is set by the user for who they are brokering. Commissions represent a portion of the total sale. For instance, if a Broker had sold RECs on your behalf, the Broker would get 5% of the profits, if the commission percentage that was set by the user was 5%.

# Upload energy data

{% hint style="info" %}
You can only upload energy data after your project has been approved by your registry
{% endhint %}

RECs are issued against energy produced by a renewable source. To transform renewable energy into RECs, users upload their *energy data* to Fuel Switch.&#x20;

We refer to *energy data* when describing the readings (kWh and timestamp) captured by meters of renewable energy sources (aka. renewable energy projects). Energy data is always associated to a single, specific meter of a renewable project.

# Data format & validation

Fuel Switch supports both **CSV** and **XLSX** file extensions for manual energy data uploads through our user interface. However, we suggest using **CSV** files when uploading energy data directly to our API, since the formatting of XLSX files can be bit tricky.

## Data Formats

The sections below describe the data formats that we support, i.e. the content of the energy data uploads. Please inquire if you would like us to integrate your data format.

### Raw Format

In its most basic form, an energy reading is just an amount (kWh generated) and a timestamp (date and time of generation). We call this our **Raw** format, which we use internally in our data processing pipelines. Fuel Switch users can also upload their energy data in this format.&#x20;

Our Raw format consists of an [ISO 8601](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601) timestamp and an energy reading in kWh (comma delimited), as shown in the example below:

```
2022-11-25T11:30:05.563Z,141.60
2022-11-25T12:00:05.563Z,144.00
2022-11-25T12:30:05.563Z,194.00
2022-11-25T13:00:05.563Z,200.00
```

### Plug and Play SCADA Format

Fuel Switch enables limited support for energy data from [PNPSCADA](https://wiki.pnpscada.com/forumHome.jsp) meters.&#x20;

![](https://2045867227-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FTn2Uyk8MNVijy5L7kDiD%2Fuploads%2FAWmn8Ozp0vFE7HHLtXns%2F8.png?alt=media)

## Data Validation Checks

As mentioned before, every reading is associated with a specific meter of a specific project. Readings must also be valid and trustworthy. For example, solar PV data must only contain data generated by the panels, not data from grid, if measured on the inverter.&#x20;

Internally, we do several validation checks. If the energy data fails to comply, our system will reject the attempted upload. For data to be accepted, energy data must at least comply to the following criteria:

* **Format:** File and data must comply to one of the supported formats, described above.
  * The energy reading must be a valid number
  * The timestamp must be a valid ISO 8601 timestamp
* **Chronological:** Order matters for timestamps.
  * Energy data entries must appear sequentially, sorted by timestamp from oldest to latest reading. In other words, today's readings must appear after yesterday's readings, for the energy data to be valid, if you are uploading a single file for both days.
  * Upload older energy data files first. For example, if you try to upload yesterday's data after you uploaded today's data, you might get an error.&#x20;
* **Resolution:** The time interval between energy readings can't be less than 1 second.
* **Limited Production Rate:** The max number of RECs that can be produced in a second is one hundred. In other words, energy readings can't exceed 100MW per second.
* **No Future Timestamps:** Energy readings with a timestamp in the future (relative to the time when uploading), will be rejected.
* **Zero Readings are Rejected:** We filter out all energy readings with a value of zero.
* **Unique:** Energy data uploads must not contain any duplicate values.
* **Commission Date Matters:** Energy readings older than the commission date of a project will be rejected.
* **Incremental:** Fuel Switch expects incremental energy readings, as opposed to cumulative readings. This means that each data point must define the amount of energy produced within a given timeframe, not the amount of energy produced to date.

# Manual energy data uploads

1. Select ‘**My Projects’** on the side menu (or hamburger menu on mobile)
2. Select the project that generated the renewable energy and scroll down to the specific meter
3. The system automatically assumes a meter will be a 'Manual' type meter, unless you select the option to connect an API.

<figure><img src="https://2045867227-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FTn2Uyk8MNVijy5L7kDiD%2Fuploads%2FGoLDwrRa1QL9HOoKGO2H%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=f2a55101-8241-46e0-93b4-2dc6c0ca05e3" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

4. Once created, you can navigate to the meter 'View' option by clicking on the 'Eye' icon next to the specific meter on the list of meters for that project.
5. Once registered, you can upload the data file by clicking on the 'Upload' button on the right side of the screen. For more information on the file and data formats we support, see [Data format & validation](/manage-your-projects/upload-energy-data/data-format-and-validation).

# API energy data uploads

Our system exposes a dedicated API endpoint for users who require an automated way to push energy data to Fuel Switch. For general information about the API, including endpoints and documentation, see [Fuel Switch API](/fuel-switch-api).

## Prerequisites

The following is necessary to be in place before you get started with using the Fuel Switch API (the same follows for our sandbox environment). You must have:

1. KYC-approved account registered on Fuel Switch.
2. Approved renewable project
3. Meters registered to the project. If you don't aim to use the Fuel Switch API to upload meter data, you can select '*Manual'* as the meter type.

We recommend making use of the meter API integrations where possible to ensure data accuracy in the REC lifecycle. If your current meter integration is not yet supported, please reach out to us on <info@fuelswitch.io>.

## Upload Data

There are several steps involved in uploading energy data to Fuel Switch via the API. You can find the details on how to do this on our [Swagger page](https://app.fuelswitch.io/swagger).

The sections below give a high-level overview of the steps to go from authentication to uploading data and viewing the results, along with the mutations/queries to execute each action.

### Authenticate

Authentication is done via API Keys. More details can be found on the [Fuel Switch API](/fuel-switch-api) page.

### Upload Energy Data

We expose the `addMeterData` mutation for uploading energy data to a meter. This mutation expects the following parameters:

* `meterId`: The unique identifier of your meter. The section that follows explains how to retrieve this identifier. You can optionally save this on your application's side for regular use.
* `file.name`: We save every raw energy data upload as a unique file on our database. This parameter is for your convenience, to identify individual energy data uploads. Make sure it's unique to avoid confusion.
* `blob64`: A base64 encoded CSV string of the energy readings. For more information about the format of the CSV data, see [Data format & validation](/manage-your-projects/upload-energy-data/data-format-and-validation#raw-format).&#x20;

The snippet below shows how to convert CSV energy readings to a base64 string in a NodeJs application.

```javascript
const { Buffer } = require('node:buffer');
const csv =
"2024-03-25T11:30:05.563Z,141.60\n"+
"2024-03-25T12:00:05.563Z,144.00\n"+
"2024-03-25T12:30:05.563Z,194.00\n"+
"2024-03-25T13:00:05.563Z,200.00"
// Convert the CSV data to a base64-encoded string
const csvBase64 = Buffer.from(csv).toString("base64");
```

Note that energy data can be uploaded to our API at any frequency, as long as the interval between meter readings are greater than one second (as mentioned in [Data format & validation](/manage-your-projects/upload-energy-data/data-format-and-validation#data-validation-checks)).

### Get Meter Details

To retrieve a list of meters linked to a specific project, and data relating to the meters, use the `userRepMeters` query. It expects a unique identifier for the project (the project ID) and pagination parameters to specify the number of meters to be retrieved. The section that follows shows how to get the project ID.

This mutation is useful for;

* Retrieving **meter metadata details**, such as the meter ID (used for uploading energy data), name and associated documents.
* Inspecting a summary of a meter's **verified/unverified energy.** The data returns are as follows:
  * `verifiedEnergy`: Verified energy is energy approved by the registry, and for which RECs have been issued.
  * `unverifiedEnergy`: Energy that has not yet been verified by the registry. This includes both data that has not been sent to the registry for approval, and data that is pending approval.
  * `unverifiedStartDate`: Epoch timestamp of the first (oldest) unverified energy reading.
  * `unverifiedEndDate`: Epoch timestamp of the last (most recent) unverified energy reading.

### Get Project Details

Get a list of projects owned by your account, using the `userReps` query. This step is necessary to retrieve the project ID. You can consider storing this identifier in your application for future use.

### Get Uploaded Energy Data

To retrieve uploaded energy data of a project, use the `meterDataFiles` query. It fetches a list of uploaded energy data files for a specific project. You can then filter the response to find all the uploads for a specific meter. This function is useful for finding the unique identifier for an erroneous upload, that you need to delete.

### Delete Energy Data

To delete an energy data upload, use the `deleteMeterUpload` mutation. It expects a meter ID (retrieve using the `userRepMeters` query) and energy data file upload ID (retrieve using the `meterDataFiles` query).&#x20;

# Get RECs

Here we demonstrate how to consolidate your energy data, so that you can receive RECs. If you follow along with this guide, you should now have energy data uploaded to your renewable energy project. Complete the previous steps if you don't have any data yet.&#x20;

1. Navigate to ‘**My Energy Submissions**’ on the side menu (or hamburger menu on mobile)
2. Your energy summary will show in the table split per individual renewable energy device/project. The system auto-calculates your total generation.
3. Select a device that has more than 1MWh (1000kWh) and click ‘**Submit**’ on the specific device's line item, on the right side of the screen.

<figure><img src="https://2045867227-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FTn2Uyk8MNVijy5L7kDiD%2Fuploads%2FniJNhNkp6ztCswpqPicq%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=d3d8e948-a480-4ec4-8620-a5ea403100c0" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

4. The system will provide you with a confirmation pop-up on the total nr of RECs you can submit for issuance. Click ‘**Confirm Submission**’ to have your Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) verified by the Registry and minted on the blockchain.

<figure><img src="https://2045867227-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FTn2Uyk8MNVijy5L7kDiD%2Fuploads%2Fc8XFY5DsttzHIJcmjyrK%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=d4add97e-d0d3-4df5-aad0-f31d37e97d2e" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Fuel Switch API

Fuel Switch exposes a REST API that allow users with renewable energy projects to upload energy data in an automated manner.

{% hint style="info" %}
&#x20;For more information about data format and validation, see [Data format & validation](/manage-your-projects/upload-energy-data/data-format-and-validation)
{% endhint %}

## Swagger

{% hint style="info" %}
All timestamps should use the ISO8601 format.

Example of a valid timestamp: `2023-09-30T22:00:00.000Z`
{% endhint %}

* Production Swagger: <https://app.fuelswitch.io/swagger>
* Sandbox Swagger: <https://app-testnet.fuelswitch.io/swagger>

The Fuel Switch API allows third-party services to interact directly with the Fuel Switch backend (instead of going through our [web application](https://app.fuelswitch.io/)). The features available are listed below.

## Sandbox Environment

We offer a complete sandbox environment that developers can use to build and test integrations with our system, without affecting anything on production. To use the sandbox, you will need an approved account on the [Fuel Switch sandbox environment](https://app-testnet.fuelswitch.io/). Sign up, verify your email, and fill out the KYC information. If the KYC approval takes longer than expected, reach out to the Fuel Switch administrator via [support@fuelswitch.io](mailto://support@fuelswitch.io) to approve your account.

The Fuel Switch production and sandbox web applications can be accessed here:

* Production Web App: <https://app.fuelswitch.io/>
* Sandbox Web App: <https://app-testnet.fuelswitch.io/>

## Base URL

The following endpoints are available for Fuel Switch:

* Production API: <https://app.fuelswitch.io/api/v1>
* Sandbox API: <https://app-testnet.fuelswitch.io/api/v1>

## Generating an API Key

To interact with the API, you first need to generate an API key. Follow these steps to create a new API key:

* **Log in to Your Account**\
  Visit the website and log into your account using your credentials.
* **Navigate to Account Settings**\
  After logging in, click on your account icon in the top-right corner of the page.\
  In the dropdown menu, select **Account Settings**.
* **Go to API Keys Section**\
  Inside Account Settings, locate and click on the **API Keys** tab. This is where you can manage your existing keys or generate new ones.
* **Generate a New API Key**\
  Click on the **Generate New Key** button.\
  You will be prompted to provide a name for your API key to help identify it in the future.
* **Copy and Store the Key**\
  After generating the key, make sure to copy it and store it securely. You will not be able to view the key again after this point.

## Authentication

* **Type**: API Key
* **Key Name**: `fuelswitch-api-key`
* **Description**: Our API uses an API key-based authentication mechanism. Each request to the API must include a valid API key in the request headers. You can generate an API key via the web UI by navigating to the **Account Settings → API Keys** section and creating a new key (see above section). Once generated, you can copy the `fuelswitch-api-key` and use it in your requests.
* **How to Use**:
  * The API key should be added to the request header of each API call as follows:

    ```json
    fuelswitch-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY
    ```
* **Example**: In a cURL request, the API key would be included like this:

  ```bash
  curl -X GET "https://app-testnet.fuelswitch.io/api/v1" \
  -H "fuelswitch-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY"
  ```
* **Important Notes**:
  * Ensure the API key is kept confidential and secure.
  * The API key is unique to your account and should be regenerated if compromised.
  * If the API key is missing or invalid, the API will return an authentication error with a message of "UNAUTHORIZED"
